Over the past several years, the boys soccer program at Hood River Valley High School has evolved from a good program into a great program under coach Jaime Rivera, but last Saturday, Rivera and his Eagles took the school’s program and officially turned it into a dynasty.
After a rocky game against Silverton last Tuesday, the HRV boys soccer team returned to form Saturday with a decisive victory over Bend, besting the visiting Lava Bears, 2-0, and earning a trip to the 5A semifinals once again.
The HRV boys soccer team was all business Tuesday night in Hood River, picking apart another opponent with clinical coldness and precision — this time The Dalles Riverhawks, who were shut out by The Eagles for the second time this season, unable to answer the three goals scored by HRV.
HRV (10-0-2, 4-0 league) swept the first round of Columbia River Conference play earlier this week shutting out its third league opponent in a row, The Dalles Riverhawks (2-10, 1-3 league), by a score of 7-0. It was the Eagles’ fifth consecutive shutout this season (eighth overall).
The defending OSAA Class 5A boys soccer state champion Hood River Valley High Eagles have advanced to the state finals the last two years. The Eagles, guided by sixth-year head coach Jaime Rivera and assistant Felipe Rayo, have another talented squad again this season and they’ll be seeking to return to the state championship game for a third straight year.
In surely the biggest play of his career so far, Hood River Valley High School goalie Marco Cuevas stood face-to-face with Wilsonville Wildcat Garrett Bonell, with just 11 meters of frozen field between them.
