Joy Bell and Lucy McLean have been selected as January Students of the Month by the Hood River Elks Lodge and were presented $100 checks at a recent Lodge meeting. Both are seniors at Hood River Valley High School. They, along with the other monthly winners, will be honored at a banquet on May 31 of this year.
Lucy McLean successfully defended her (unofficial) title as “Queen of the Cato Race” Saturday at Timberline Lodge, where the Hood River Valley High School senior blew away the competition to win the varsity girls race for a fourth consecutive year. Also defending his title, senior Austin Keillor posted the fastest time of the day to win the varsity boys race for his second year.
Skiers battled changing weather, high winds, low visibility and variable course conditions last week in the 2014 Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championships at Mt. Hood Meadows.
As expected, Saturday’s OISRA Mt. Hood Ski League end-of-season ceremony was dominated by Hood River Valley High School boys and girls ski teams, who claimed first-place awards in every team and individual category.
Fast and furious was the theme for Hood River Valley High School ski team this weekend in the team’s second race of the season; and much like the first (Jan. 4 Cato Race), Austin Keillor and Lucy McLean had unbeatable performances that brought individual top honors and propelled both varsity boys and girls teams to top finishes.
With only two races remaining in Mount Hood Ski League action, Hood River Valley High School skiers are looking poised to be among the top echelon at next month’s Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championships.
With blue skies and sun-softened snow, the Hood River Valley High School ski team competed in spring-like conditions over the weekend at Ski Bowl. The slalom event brought teams from the Mt. Hood Ski League for the third race of the season.
In the second race of the season, Hood River Valley High School ski team finished first overall and nabbed fastest times in both boys and girls fields Saturday at Mt. Hood Meadows. The HRV girls dominated their field with a blowout win and five racers finishing in the top 10 in the slalom event on MHM’s Stadium run. Boys results were much closer, with HRV edging The Dalles and Sandy high schools by a few close points for the win.
