Following an unsuccessful recruitment to fill the city attorney position upon the retirement of City Attorney Gene Parker in March, The City of The Dalles’ council approved a service contract with Campbell Phillips, PC, of The Dalles to provide the city with legal services at their regular meeting Jan. 27.

The Columbia Gateway Urban Renewal Agency voted 6-2 Tuesday to move ahead with negotiations on an agreement for development of a national brand hotel at First and Union streets. The board also voted 7-1 to sign a binding agreement with Tokola Development that will finalize details for conversion of the old Tony’s building on Second Street into housing units on the upper floors and retail space at street level.

Decisions in faraway China may soon have a direct, and possibly damaging, impact on local recycling programs. According to Jim Winterbottom, district manager of The Dalles Disposal/Hood River Garbage, China is poised to ban the import of many materials that are currently recycled in that country. “Drastic changes that have been announced in the international recycling markets within the last three months are causing a potential crisis in terms of our recycling industry on the West Coast in particular,” Winterbottom explained.
