In his fourth and final try on the Mount Hood Meadows Course for the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Race Association state championships last Thursday and Friday, The Dalles senior Martin Carter posted his best finish ever to lock down 21st place overall out of the 93 male participants and help the Riverhawks secure eighth place in the team standings.

Both The Dalles boys’ and girls’ ski team members put together solid enough times this past Saturday on the Middlefork Course at Mount Hood Meadows to qualify for the OISRA state meet.

Under solid conditions atop the Meadows Course, ski team members from The Dalles, Dufur and South Wasco County had six top-15 finishes in a Mount Hood Ski League slalom race Saturday.

Usually at this time of year, senior Sydney Reed is in the middle of her basketball season from her point guard position for the Dufur High School program. Instead of dribbling, passing and shooting 3-pointers, Reed is equipped with skis, a helmet and goggles at the start of 2017.

Students in the Talented and Gifted program at North Wasco County School District 21 had the opportunity for a little extra enrichment this month at outdoor school. The trip on March 6-8 included camping, hiking, exploring fossils, using a telescope and learning about Native American culture at the Hancock Field Station in the vicinity of Fossil, Ore.
