In a field of 340 athletes from around the world, two hometown racers stood out in last weekend’s Naish StandUp Paddle Challenge on the Hood River waterfront. The event is part of the World Paddling League series, so the stakes were high, racers might have said in Dutch, German, Japanese, Spanish or French.

Local sailors defended the state title for the Gorge Sailing Team, last weekend, once again taking first place in the Oregon High School Sailing state regatta, held Sunday near the Hood River Marina.

Hood River Valley High School sent their best to compete in the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association’s state championship at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center last Friday. A total of 11 teams made it out from all over Oregon.

Last Saturday and Sunday, Cascade Locks held the third annual state championship regatta. HRV, Lincoln, and Oregon Episcopal High school were contending for the championship previously held by HRV.

Grey jays leapt from branches, swooping in to steal bits of pastries as the main square outside the Teacup’s Ray Garey Cabin bustled with ski enthusiasts. A vibrant gathering of junior racers, coaches and their parents — all visually and verbally expressing their excitement — crowded around waxing benches, contemplating temperature and wax effectiveness.

Teacup Nordic standouts Nils Engbersen and Sam Wiley were on the road last weekend for a Junior National qualifier race in Spokane. Both skiers placed high enough to represent the Pacific Northwest at next month’s Junior Nationals race at Donner Pass, Calif.

The Hood River Valley Swim Team sent eight swimmers to Astoria for the “Eggstravaganza” swim meet April 14-15. Highlights for HRVST included Per Bergstrom winning every event he entered as well as event wins from Adam Burke, Allison Burke, Jamie Robinson and Charles Sutherland.
