The Port of The Dalles will increase the size of Klindt Cove Kiwanis Park by another 1.25 acres, expanding onto an adjacent lot to the west. Kathy Norton, assistant to the port director, said the upcoming development calls for additional parking, a walking path, heating for the restrooms, landscaping of the new lot, and a butterfly garden.

“Ray,” a 1,300-pound male California sea lion, was a well-known fixture at The Dalles Marina, where he took up residence on a tenant’s dock in 2011. For years, he was a highly visible member of the river community, hauling himself out on a marina dock each day and feasting on salmon migrating through the river.

Sea Lions living above Bonneville Dam aren’t following usual patterns The Dalles Marina tenants aren’t expecting their close encounters with sea lions — or one sea lion in particular — to go away any time soon, particularly after a July 3 letter from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on the subject.
