To the editor: In Karen Wilson’s column, “Trump should be “modern day president,” she lists various statements by him that are offensive. I agree that they are offensive, juvenile and unnecessary. However, she ignores the uncalled-for vile hatred of various forms thrown at him on nearly a daily basis.

Words have power to inform, persuade and influence attitudes, decisions, elections, and destinies. And when they are distributed by mass media, words have a significant impact in shaping public opinion and indirectly controlling and manipulating our actions. If we ever hope to be honestly informed and to understand each other, then we need to occasionally listen to the other side and not feast exclusively on news outlets that confirm our own ideas.

The Dalles City Council invited Rob Bovett, attorney for the Oregon Association of Counties, to brief officials and community members Monday about how sales of recreational marijuana are being regulated. Bovett took the place of Sean O’Day, legal counsel for the League of Oregon cities, due to a scheduling conflict.

The Dalles Police Chief Jay Waterbury appealed to the city council Monday to let voters decide whether recreational marijuana should be grown, processed, packaged and sold in town. “What we are asking you to do is let citizens make a decision, give them a chance to vote,” he said following testimony at the meeting from citizens on both sides of the issue.
