MADRAS — It was a year of transition for South Wasco County, as Carly Johnson took the post as the girls basketball program’s new head coach. Friday and Saturday, No. 9-ranked SWC picked up back-to-back wins over Dufur (50-29) and Echo (44-41) to score a second straight district championship in Big Sky Conference basketball play at the Buffalo Dome in Madras.

The No. 5-ranked girls South Wasco County hoops team jumpstarted its Big Sky Conference schedule with three straight lopsided victories, the last two on Monday and Tuesday against Mitchell-Spray and Arlington, where they came out on top by a combined 101-41 margin.

MAUPIN – All-state middle blocker Jada Myers looks around the gymnasium and sees a lot of familiar faces and several new ones. Although the landscape is much different than a year ago, the senior is not making any excuses — she is even more motivated to help the South Wasco County Redsides win a championship.

MAUPIN – Through her four-year volleyball career, South Wasco County senior Allie Noland has seen it all and been through it all. Noland and junior teammate Jada Myers received enough votes from opposing coaches to earn all-state honorable mention awards for their standout play last fall.

As the state’s No. 10 1A squad, the South Wasco County Redsides are going to get a fight every night. Condon-Wheeler had upset on its mind, ahead 13-12 through one period, when SWC flipped the switch on a 46-18 run over the final three quarters to win, 58-31, Friday night in Maupin.

Abby Birman scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and the No. 10-ranked South Wasco County Redsides forged a comeback to capture their seventh straight league win of the season, 53-39, over Dufur in girls’ basketball action Friday at Dufur High School.

The No. 9-ranked South Wasco County Redsides won their fourth straight, third in conference action, by a 61- 14 margin over Ione Friday in girls’ basketball action from Maupin.

Playing three games in three days, the South Wasco County girls’ basketball team was put to the test in a pair of tournament games and a Saturday matchup against Echo, scoring a 1-2 record over that stretch. At the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament at Helix High School, the No. 8-ranked Lady Redsides lost by an 84-25 score versus No. 6-ranked and undefeated Nixyaawii and suffered another setback on Friday, 43-36, against No. 15 Griswold.

Things could not be better for No. 1-ranked South Wasco County. In their 4-0 start, the Redsides are averaging nearly 51 points a contest and using a variety of weapons a nightly basis to turn the tide in games. Saturday against Powers, Abby Birman scored 15 of her season-high 19 points in the second and third quarters, as the Redsides finished the final three quarters of play on a 42-15 run to capture a lopsided 51-19 triumph Saturday at the Pacific Girls’ Basketball Tournament held in Port Orford.
