The Hood River waterfront recreation beaches and parks are effectively shrinking as high water levels in the Columbia River climb higher up the shoreline. The spring runoff is causing high water levels throughout the Columbia/Snake River system, but local concerns are focused on water safety in the run up to Memorial Day weekend.

A bicyclist navigates high water covering the Riverfront Trail at the Union St. underpass in The Dalles, which was closed to traffic. Much of nearby Riverfront Park was also flooded.

A combination of snow melt and rain has caused the river to overtop the banks in some areas, and according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the high water level is necessary for flood control. City officials said the underpass will be closed as needed through spring.
