To the editor: I support Gregg Walden for his efforts and success in which he lobbied the White House for the pardon of Dwight and Steven Hammond. Thank you also to the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke who also supported the Hammonds.

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., has been granted his request to have Harney County rancher Dwight Hammond Jr., and his son, Steven, pardoned by President Donald Trump. “Today is a win for justice and an acknowledgement of our unique way of life in the high desert, rural West,” said Walden on Tuesday morning when news broke that President Donald Trump had granted full pardons to the Hammonds.

The Oregon Cattlemen’s Association believes the federal government has violated the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by requiring two members of the Hammond family in Harney County to serve more time behind bars.
