MORO – While everyone outside their locker room had doubts as to how realistic any Baker City berths were at the start of the season, the Sherman Huskies held steadfast to the belief that anything was possible as long as they put in the work and stayed united. That extra drive was all they needed to pick up a fifth consecutive trip to Baker.

Moments after the final buzzer rang in Sherman’s 74-44 victory over Condon-Wheeler last Saturday, there wasn’t a lot jumping around in celebration – three straight district titles is a nice thing, but this team has loftier goals to accomplish. The drive for a third consecutive state championship starts at 4 p.m. Saturday against No. 16-ranked Grand View Christian Academy in Moro with a trip to Baker City hanging in the balance.

The two-time defending state champion Sherman Huskies are off to an 8-1 start and a No. 1 ranking, and head coach Gary Lewis still feels his group has yet to put an entire game together. At the Optimist Christmas Classic in La Grande, the Huskies wrapped up a 3-0 run with a 55-33 victory over the 2A classification’s No. 11-ranked squad, Elgin, in the championship game Friday at Eastern Oregon University.

MORO – Sherman head coach Gary Lewis had been patiently waiting for a scoring performance like Treve Martin put on Tuesday night against Yakama Tribal. Martin scored a season-high 29 points, including 18 in the second half, to give the No. 2-ranked Huskies the scoring boost needed for a 74-57 triumph Tuesday in Moro.

The two-time defending champion Sherman Huskies needed a quarter to get their bearings about them, but then hit the afterburners for a 52-28 run over the final three quarters of play in a 70-41 blowout victory over Stanfield Friday in first-day basketball action at the Sherman Invitational Tournament in Moro.
