MILWAUKIE – Rex-Putnam used their size in the paint and outside shooting to dominate The Dalles in an 88-43 state play-in victory Tuesday in a 5A matchup in Milwaukie.
The last time Hood River Valley and The Dalles faced off on Feb. 10, Riverhawk junior Dakota Murr fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, so Josh Nisbet and Eric Flores stepped up to help the team pick up a critical league win. Tuesday night in Hood River, Murr put his team, the program and community on his back in a record-setting performance that all but assured the Riverhawks a state play-in berth.
Dakota Murr, Eric Flores and Josh Nisbet each hit double figures, but The Dalles could not contain Hermiston in the second half, as Xavier Rambo, Chance Flores and the No. 10 Bulldogs broke open a one-point halftime lead with a 42-28 second-half run to capture a 77-62 Columbia River Conference triumph Monday night in Hermiston.
Dakota Murr, Eric Flores and Josh Nisbet combined for 37 points, but The Dalles Riverhawks could not contain a La Grande team that went on a 39-21 run in the second half in a 65-44 final Saturday in The Dalles.
At the three-day Vince Dulcich Memorial Tournament last week in Astoria, The Dalles boys’ basketball team went 1-2, finally taking a 63-54 victory Thursday over Molalla.
Playing without all-league guard Dakota Murr, The Dalles Riverhawks kept pace with Forest Grove in the first half, but the 6A Vikings fired out for 51-18 run in the second stanza in a 94-44 victory Thursday.
The Dalles trailed by 19 points late in the third quarter and cut its deficit down to eight points two minutes into the fourth period, but the Sisters’ Outlaws went on an 11-2 run down the stretch for a 48-30 victory Wednesday in a non-league boys’ basketball game played at Kurtz Gym.
The Dalles Riverhawks fought tough with Sandy through the first two quarter of play, but the Pioneers were able to create some distance with a 24-6 third-quarter run on their way to a 73-54 victory Friday in a non-league boys’ basketball contest played at Sandy High School.
With one year under the tutelage of head coach Nathan Morris, The Dalles boys’ basketball team can use what they learned last year and build on it for the 2016-17 winter season.
