he Dalles boys and girls put up 22 personal records, 19 top-5 finishes, placed in 25 of 36 events and the senior duo of Justin Conklin and Emma Mullins each had wins at Friday’s Dean Nice Invitational in Gresham.

“If you look at some of those results, I am really impressed with how our kids did and where they are right now at this point in the season,” TD head coach Garth Miller said. “In this meet, it wasn’t just a few kids who stepped up, we stepped up as a team, on both the boys and girls side, so it was really good.”

Competing against 14 other schools from Washington and Oregon, The Dalles track and field squad tallied a combined 30 personal records and the girls totaled 51.5 points for fourth place at the Kiwanis Twilight Invitational Friday in Hermiston.

Since he hadn’t raced competitively in a couple of weeks, The Dalles junior Samuel Alvarez admitted that he did feel a little rusty, but he walks away from his latest performance feeling good about his marks. Alvarez turned in a final time of 17 minutes and 52.5 seconds for 81st place out of 412 in the junior boy’s category and Emma Mullins received a medal for finishing in the top-48 after ending up 24th in the 239-person senior girl’s division with her mark of 20:29.5 at the Foot Locker West Regional Cross Country Meet held Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.

With the Intermountain Conference District races coming up Wednesday, The Dalles cross country squad is making its state-qualifying case. Emma Mullins, Zoe Orion and Evan Despain captured individual titles, and both the boys’ junior varsity and varsity groups picked up team victories at the Kyle Burnside Wildhorse Invitational held Thursday in Pendleton.

The Dalles cross country team hustles in the new year with Hood River Valley, Pendleton, Crook County, Redmond and Ridgeview representing the new challengers in the Intermountain Conference. So that means returning state qualifiers Emma Mullins, Hanna Ziegenhagen, Samuel Alvarez, Rey Aviluz, Zack Ziegenhagen and the rest of the Riverhawks will need to be at the top of their game.

With a pair of victories in his back pocket from the Mullen-Leavitt Invitational, The Dalles standout Justin Conklin improved on his times and heights against much stiffer competition this time around for first-place outputs in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles at the Sherwood Opener Wednesday at Sherwood High School.
