With the holiday spirit filling our hearts and city streets this month, it seemed fitting to highlight a tree that often finds its way into our homes this time of year, adorned with ornaments and family mementos: the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).
Boys’ water polo had a busy week as they played two games on the road and one game at home in the span of three days.
The HRV boys water polo team has typically spread around the scoring fairly well this season, but that was not the case this past week.
The girls water polo team had a breakout season in 2015, finishing third in the state tournament after not winning in a single game in their inaugural 2014 campaign and appear to have picked up where they left off last season, pummeling David Douglas 15-2 in the Eagles’ away opener on Tuesday.
They may have lost some key players due to graduation, but the boys water polo team, steadily growing over the past few years, showed they are stronger than ever earlier this week during HRV’s debut against David Douglas, during which the Eagles outplayed the 6A team, cruising to an 18-7 victory on the road.
Thursday night at Sandy High School featured two different worlds between the boys and girls games. The boys varsity won by forfeit as Sandy, already short on players, didn’t provide the players for a regulation game. HRV provided Sandy some players and it was a great opportunity to have essentially a refereed scrimmage where everyone was able to get valuable playing experience.
The HRV girls and boys water polo teams launched their conference competitive season with an away game at David Douglas. The school has a 30-year history of a dominant swimming program which feeds its water polo teams with tough, fast swimmers. This year is no different and the adage “defense wins games” was the message being repeated to the teams by the HRV coaching of staff Dave Cameron, Kellie Dunn and Dave Robinson.
