The Dalles boys’ tennis team had two doubles teams and a singles player move in to second-day action at the 5A Special District 1 Tournament ending Saturday in Hermiston. Jesus Barajas and Brandon Bustamante defeated their Hood River Valley opponents in three sets, by scores of 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 to advance into the quarterfinals. After a second-round bye, they lost 2-6, 3-6 to a Hermiston team, but moved onto play for Day 2.
While names like Will Coy, Alex Lopez, Ethan Martin and Pedro Lopez highlighted the varsity action in Wednesday’s 5-3 league match loss on the road against Hood River Valley, The Dalles boys’ tennis coach Shea MacNab was most impressed with one of his up-and-coming standouts, Sanjay Ramanathan. Ramanathan, who has not had the chance to play much this season, put on a dazzling display in his junior varsity match, taking a close 9-7 pro-set loss for his efforts.
The Dalles boys’ tennis team lost 5-3 on the road Monday to Redmond, but head coach Shea MacNab was beaming about the play of Daniel Santillan, James Pashek and the No. 4 doubles team of Paul Clark and Caleb Turner. Santillan and Pashek had straight sets wins, and Clark and Turner needed three sets before securing a slim 10-8 win in the final set.
Entering Thursday’s varsity tennis match against Wilsonville, The Dalles girls’ tennis coach Debby Jones knew her group would have its work cut out. Wilsonville swept through singles play, but the Riverhawks claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles in a 6-2 loss against the host Wildcats.
It was the type of finishing flurry The Dalles coach Andrew Hughes wanted for his varsity boy’s tennis team. Cole McDowell kept his winning streak going and the newly formed No. 1 doubles team of Griffin Martin and Christian Munoz added a dominant performance to lead the Eagle Indians to a resounding 9-0 victory Wednesday in league tennis action in Pendleton.
