Dear editor, Pointman Ministries of The Dalles would like to thank The Dalles Chronicle, the people of The Dalles and Wasco County residents for the generosity and their support in raising funds for the people of Paradise, Calif., victims of the devastating Camp Fire.
This year’s local observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which takes place Friday, Sept. 21, will focus on the recent return of 55 remains from Korea believed to be U.S. military personnel.
Military family members and veterans with Point Man International Ministries packed 16 boxes Thursday for shipment to a special operations team deployed to a combat zone in the Middle East. “We asked the community for help to get some snack and hygiene items together, and they stepped up to help us take care of these men,” said Dan Brophy, a Marine vet of Vietnam who is Point Man’s chaplain.
Independence Day in The Dalles will be celebrated with a picnic sponsored by veterans, a parade and several other family-friendly activities.
“To all who shall see these presents, greetings. Know ye, People of The Dalles, that we have homefront personnel deployed in harm’s way. As we near the Fourth of July, our Independence Day, we urge all citizenry to show their appreciation for the many Freedoms America enjoys by coming forward with donations of gift and coin to care for our own,” said Marine veteran Dan Brophy in a formal declaration about the need for community help with Operation Outreach.
Veterans utilizing services through the Portland health care network are invited to meet top leaders and voice concerns at a listening session Thursday, June 14, in The Dalles. Dan Brophy, a local Marine veteran of Vietnam, has been distributing flyers and trying to get the word out to other veterans that this is a golden opportunity for them to let VA (Veterans Administration) officials know what is working for them and what is not.
The Holiday for Heroes Committee received a photo Dec. 27 from a team of defense contractors in Afghanistan posing with 31 Christmas boxes they received from Gorge residents.
I pulled into the Chronicle parking lot just before sunrise Wednesday morning to find Rod Runyon, Northeast District ride captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, and three other bikers ready to depart. We were headed out on a very important mission: To escort The Wall that Heals on its one-hour journey from Toppenish to Goldendale, where it would be visited by thousands from Thursday, Aug. 31, through Sunday afternoon, Sept. 3.
The Dalles Outpost of Point Man International Ministries is on a mission to help veterans who are struggling with the aftermath of war, and to send comfort and care items to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Toward that end, the group, an “outreach for veterans by veterans” will be in high gear raising funds through two different venues during the next few weeks: A poker run and a Stoner AR-15 raffle.
