Firefighters with the Dallesport Fire Department burn grass and debris at the old ferry landing across the Columbia River from Union Street. The burn provided training opportunities, and removed debris at the site, which is popular as a private firework launch place on the Fourth of July.

A firefighter with Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue knocks down flames consuming a fully-engulfed motorhome near the corner of J. and 12th Streets in The Dalles Saturday morning at 4 a.m. Firefighters cleared from the scene at 5:45 a.m. Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue was assisted on scene by Dallesport Fire department crews.

To the editor: I think that fireworks on the Fourth of July has degenerated into a mockery of freedom. I spent a year of fear in Iraq in 2004 and 2005. On March 24, 2004, at 5 a.m., my soldiers were under a rocket attack. These rockets wounded 29 soldiers and killed four. These booms had serious bloody consequences. (The attack was in Taji, about 10 miles north of Baghdad.)
