A local man who was hard of hearing was killed Dec. 30 when he was hit by a train near the intersection of West Second and Cherry Heights Road. The train conductor told police he repeatedly sounded his horn — “It felt like 50 times,” he told officers — but Strunk did not “make an effort to turn or look at the train.”

Gorge Winds Concert Band will present its 2014 Spring Concert Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m. in The Dalles Civic Auditorium. Special guest performer will be Corin Parker featuring Leonard Berstein’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on piano. Other works to be included are: “Along an English Countryside,” “Tuscola Mountain Celebration,” “Mancini Spectacular,” “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor” and a local trumpet trio playing Leroy Anderson’s famous “Bugler’s Holiday.” Co-conductors are Larry Loop and Nathan Parker. Concert admission is free, though donations are welcome.
