D21’s first bi-lingual administrator has taken the helm at Chenowith Elementary School.

Principal Monica “Mo” Darnall comes to The Dalles from Utah, where she and her husband lived for five years, but she’s an Oregon native who has spent most of her career here.

To the editor: NWCSD 21 Board of Directors: When the two districts merged, we were promised we’d save money with only one administration, and our school system would be better off. Yet our district remains the same, with very little community support behind it. I received an anonymous letter in an email, with complaints against Candy Armstrong, and a note saying the board would not investigate anonymous complaints. Consider that letter signed by me as well, there needs to some serious review of policy. This is now the third complaint you’ve received, I hope you take it seriously and do what is best for the students.

Chenowith Elementary School is putting on the Disney production of “Aladdin Kids” on Nov. 2, 3, 4, and 5, in the school cafeteria. The performances Nov. 2-4 will start at 6:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Nov. 5, the performance is at 2 p.m.

Chenowith Elementary School showed a 20 percent gain in overall academic achievement in the 2016-17 school year, according to the just-released state school report card. In a statement on the state report card, Chenowith Principal Anne Shull said it was “a year of celebration for Chenowith and our students!”

For several years, it has been a tradition for members of the Masonic Lodge in The Dalles to purchase bicycles and then donate them to local schools as an incentive to encourage youngsters to do more reading. Hew Hillis, master of Wasco Masonic Lodge No. 15, said members have engaged in the program since 2014.
