MAUPIN – As a new wave in the 1A landscape, six-man football gave small schools an opportunity to field rosters to compete at a high level. With the leadership of head coach Mike Waine and defensive coordinator Michael Carter, the South Wasco County Redsides finished with a 7-2 record and capped their six-man campaign with a 65-13 blowout win over Eddyville Charter in district crossover playoff contest on Oct. 27 in Madras.

Up until Friday’s six-man slugfest between South Wasco County and Joseph, both teams had skated through their schedules with lopsided victory after lopsided victory. SWC trailed 15-8 at halftime and 27-8 through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and made it an 11-point deficit with possession of the ball late, but could not complete the comeback in a 27-16 loss Friday night in Joseph.

Sweeping changes are coming for 1A football at the start of the 2018 season that will affect the South Wasco County football programs. The Redsides are playing 6-man football as part of an 18-team pilot program, marking the first time since 1959 that Oregon has participated.
