John Kitzhaber announced his resignation on Friday amid mounting questions and investigations into his fiancée, who was accused of using her position as first lady to enrich herself and benefit private consulting clients. Kitzhaber, 67, was elected to a historic fourth term as governor in November.

Va. senator’s son dies after dad was stabbed

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, who ran unsuccessfully for governor four years ago, was stabbed Tuesday in his head and chest at his home, and his son died at the residence from a gunshot wound, police said.
