The Dalles Blue Zones Project, a community wellness endeavor, has asked to extend its funding deadline to August, and hopes to band together with two other Blue Zones Projects in the state to seek grant funds.
The city will apply for a state grant to improve traffic flow at pick-up and drop-off time at the highly congested Dry Hollow Elementary School. It should know by January if it was successful.
Wasco County is the second organization in The Dalles to earn a designation as a Blue Zones Project approved worksite. It will celebrate with a blue ribbon cutting ceremony 2:30 p.m. Friday on the steps of the courthouse, at 511 Washington St.
Summit Bohannon, a 20-something who lives in The Dalles, has fully embraced the social aspect of the Blue Zones Project and has set up four different weekly get-togethers around various activities, from music to just hanging out and picking up trash.

Marielle Kowaleski is newish to the Gorge, having moved here two years ago, and she dropped in on the Blue Zones Project’s inaugural “Friends at Five” event to socialize. The get-together at the Blue Zones office on Klindt Drive, which is open to anyone who wishes to attend, drew just a handful of people, but Kowaleski was glad she came.
Over 350 adults attended last Friday’s kickoff of the Blue Zones Project in The Dalles, where attendees pledged to make small changes to live healthier, longer lives, and signed up to join walking groups called “moais.”
