Basketball players from across the state had one final time to wear their school colors at the two-day 1A Oregon Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Series Tournament this past weekend in Sisters. Dufur’s Chloe Beeson and South Wasco County’s Allie Noland were part of an East girls’ team that picked up two wins over the West for top honors, while the Sherman duo of Jacob Justesen and Treve Martin played to a 1-1 record, losing in the championship to the High Desert and Old Oregon League combination for runner-up status.
Time has flown by for senior athletes Jacob Justesen, Treve Martin and Allie Noland. From the early days of running around in gyms or concrete slabs on the playground, the game of basketball provided each of them a level of joy, frustration and life lessons that is unmatched. Justesen, Martin and Noland were recently voted on as 2017-2018 1A Oregon Basketball Coaches Association All-State athletes for their solid winter seasons.
MAUPIN – Through her four-year volleyball career, South Wasco County senior Allie Noland has seen it all and been through it all. Noland and junior teammate Jada Myers received enough votes from opposing coaches to earn all-state honorable mention awards for their standout play last fall.
MAUPIN – Saddened to see her high school basketball career come to an end following a 37-24 state loss to Hosanna Christian Friday, South Wasco County senior Ana Popchock could only think of the positives from what it meant to be a part of something special.
MADRAS – The South Wasco County Redsides have always used a team-first approach to athletics. Playing without injured Jada Myers, the Lady Redsides had three players foul out and two other finish with four fouls, and still had enough to come away with a 51-41 victory over Sherman to capture their first Big Sky Conference championship since the 1983 season.
The No. 7-ranked South Wasco County Redsides were ahead 27-20 at halftime, and then finished off Horizon Christian with a 23-19 second-half output to post a 50-39 win, their 11th straight, in Big Sky girls’ basketball action played in Maupin.
As the state’s No. 10 1A squad, the South Wasco County Redsides are going to get a fight every night. Condon-Wheeler had upset on its mind, ahead 13-12 through one period, when SWC flipped the switch on a 46-18 run over the final three quarters to win, 58-31, Friday night in Maupin.
No. 11-ranked South Wasco County held Condon-Wheeler to nine field goals, forced 33 turnovers, scored 27 second-chance points and used 18 fast break points in their 69-25 win Saturday in a girls’ basketball tilt played in Fossil.
Playing three games in three days, the South Wasco County girls’ basketball team was put to the test in a pair of tournament games and a Saturday matchup against Echo, scoring a 1-2 record over that stretch. At the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament at Helix High School, the No. 8-ranked Lady Redsides lost by an 84-25 score versus No. 6-ranked and undefeated Nixyaawii and suffered another setback on Friday, 43-36, against No. 15 Griswold.
MAUPIN – SWC and Monument-Dayville played a gritty opening half, but the Lady Redsides expanded on their 16-14 lead with a 32-17 run in the second half to secure a 48-31 victory Tuesday in a non-league contest in Maupin.
