One of Aaron Bowman’s earliest memories is feeling lousy and going to the doctor for it. Decades of frustrating doctor’s visits later, Bowman was finally diagnosed five years ago, at age 36, with an “ultra rare” disease called Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (FCS).
The D21 school board voted unanimously last Thursday to sponsor Wahtonka Community School as a charter school. Now comes the delicate work of the budgetary hand-over from the district to the new school.
A resubmitted application to turn Wahtonka Community School into a charter school was declined a second time last Wednesday, but the changes needed were so minor they were done the next day.
Wahtonka Community School student Damon Spangle was given an award by a local gaming business recently. And it wasn’t because he’s some huge gamer, it was for how he conducts himself as a person. Oregon Trail Games, which is hosting Wagon Con, a first-ever gaming convention in The Dalles in April, wanted to “highlight a kid in our community who is living the Wagon Con ideals of sportsmanship and positive attitude,” said Aaron Bowman, a convention organizer.
In an election with only a 29.3 percent turnout, some races in Wasco County’s special district elections on May 21 came down to fewer than 50 votes. “Twenty nine percent is pretty low … we had a very quiet day,” said County Clerk Linda Brown. She said a similar race in May 2011 had a 35 percent turnout.
