Every week brings another story about how AI is coming for entry-level jobs. The principle seems logical: AI does the traditional grunt work, so the first rung of the ladder disappears.
What's actually happening is more nuanced — and far more promising — than the headlines suggest.
For graduates who understand what is changing, this may be one of the most exciting moments in recent memory to begin a career.
The misconception: Entry-level jobs are less valuable with AI
AI is changing entry-level tasks, not eliminating the need for entry-level roles. That's an important distinction. A recent Cognizant and Pearson study found that 94% of HR leaders expect AI to create new entry-level roles in the next five years.
For decades, entry-level tasks have been administrative: gather information, build presentations, produce reports. It was an apprenticeship model — you had to earn the right to contribute by first proving you could handle the fundamentals. AI now handles much of that initial legwork in seconds.
This opens the door to more meaningful work earlier in a career. Today's entry-level tasks are elevated: designing AI-enabled workflows, evaluating the quality of AI outputs or identifying opportunities to improve how work gets done.
That means early-career talent can contribute to work closer to the core problems a business is trying to solve, making them even more valuable to organizations.
Many organizations have not yet redesigned early-career jobs
The truth is many entry-level roles are disappearing because companies have yet to redefine them. Freezing campus hiring is shortsighted. What really needs to be done is rebuilding what a first job looks like as the world of work continues to evolve.

In the Cognizant and Pearson study, 97% of HR leaders said human-centered skills matter more than ever in the AI era, while 67% said they value liberal arts degrees more than they used to because of the interdisciplinary thinking, contextual reasoning and communication they can bring.
Early-career talent can contribute to work closer to the core problems a business is trying to solve, making them even more valuable to organizations.
Your early professional years will be about proving you can operate inside a complex organization, learn at pace and produce valuable outcomes. Leaders will be looking to see if you can collaborate across teams, communicate clearly, manage up, and use AI to reach a better answer rather than simply a faster one.
As AI takes on the administrative load, graduates should demonstrate their value through adaptability, business acumen and distinctly human skills like critical thinking and judgment.
The advice early-career talent needs now
For years, many candidates evaluated job opportunities through a familiar lens: the recognizable brand, the impressive title, the best perks. Today, a more important question is: Will this company make me more capable three years from now than I am today?
Look for organizations that are investing in their people's capabilities. Companies that prioritize learning and exposure to new technologies will keep you current and market relevant amidst changes like the one we're experiencing now.
That may mean accepting an adjacent role or one with an unfamiliar company, and I encourage you to stay open to it. A first job should stretch your range and adaptability.
Go to where there is opportunity and take a longer view. Weigh the skills, relationships and experience you will accumulate, not just the name on the offer letter.
The early career promise of the AI era
Previous generations built careers by accumulating knowledge over time. This generation will contribute professionally and build capabilities at an accelerated pace. The most important career advantage of the AI era will not come from the technology itself. It will come from the ability to learn faster, adapt to change, and bring human judgment to the opportunities AI creates.
Years from now, I believe this will be remembered as the period when the entry-level career started moving faster, gaining exposure, responsibility and impact earlier than ever before.
