Hood River Valley’s girls tennis team moved into a tie for first place in Northwest Oregon Conference dual matches after winning its first two league tests last week — in decisive fashion.
The Eagles shut out Milwaukie, 8-0, on April 11, two days after winning at Parkrose, 6-2.
Coach Peg Bogard’s squad is deep with numerous returning varsity players and improved to 4-2 this season.
“This 2024 team has several players returning for their third year, including juniors Hayden Faaborg and Poppy Mooney at No. 1 doubles. This experience is the key to our deep bench and has already proven itself in the teams’ performance,” said Coach Peg Bogard.
In the win over Parkrose, singles players junior Jena Hager, freshman Zoe Aiken and freshman Ava Giordano won in straight sets. Parkrose No. 1 player Trina Dinh beat HRV’s No. 1 singles player Kendall Sales, 6-2, 6-2. The Nos. 1, 3 and 4 doubles matches went three sets, taking 2.5 hours to clinch the victory for the team, Bogard said.
Mooney and Faaborg won a three-set thriller over Kim Saechao and Lily Chao, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles; and HRV’s Rowan Halseth and Olivia Milikin-Spray topped Sophia Nguyen and Macey Perich, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
On Thursday, HRV swept Milwaukie 8-0, giving up 15 games in total. Sales improved to 2-1 this season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alany Padilla. No. 2 singles player Sylvia Moores won 7-6, 6-1 for HRV, as did Rowan Halseth, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3.
