The Hood River Valley’s girls lacrosse team’s fast start this season was tempered last week, as the Eagles lost two of three games — with both defeats coming at the hands of ranked teams.
HRV started the week with a 14-0 win on April 8 over Portland’s Cleveland to improve to 6-0. Coach Eliza Eaton’s Eagles, who had outscored its first six opponents, 85-37, then lost their next two matches: 17-6 on April 10 to St. Mary’s Academy; and 17-12 on April 12 to Ida B Wells. HRV kept the games within reach for a half but was unable to match their opponents’ scoring prowess over the final two periods.
Against St. Mary’s, it was 8-5 at halftime, but a 5-0 third-period scoring disadvantage proved too much for HRV to overcome. Malina Bukovansky led the Eagles with two goals. Isis Stenn, Lily Goldman, Izzy McCormack, and Renie Spence also scored single goals. St. Mary’s outshot HRV, 23-8.
Two days later against visiting Ida B Wells, HRV trailed 12-9 heading into the fourth but was outscored 5-3 in the final stanza.
In the win over Cleveland, Melina Toledo, and Claire Kealy shared time in goal for the Eagles, who outshot the visitors 19-4. Ryann Roselle led HRV with three assists. McCormack scored four goals and teammate Rowan McKenna added three.
