PuroClean of Wakefield, a locally owned water damage restoration, fire damage restoration, mold remediation, and sewage cleanup company serving Middlesex and Essex Counties, is celebrating its 10th year in business this year by reminding homeowners in towns such as Andover, Beverly, Billerica, Danvers, Haverhill, Lynn, Medford, Newburyport, Wakefield, and Woburn that fall's first hard freeze — typically arriving inland by mid-October and along the coast closer to early November — is one of the most common triggers of preventable water damage claims each year.
Owned and operated by Frank Greenwood, a Wakefield resident who has spent a decade responding to emergency water, fire, and mold losses throughout Middlesex and Essex, PuroClean of Wakefield has built its reputation on 24/7/365 emergency response and a customer service philosophy rooted in compassion during some of homeowners' most stressful moments.
"Ten years in, the calls I remember most aren't the big headline disasters — they're the burst pipe in a finished basement the week after the first freeze, or the space heater fire that started because a family didn't realize how close it was to a stack of boxes," said Frank Greenwood, owner of PuroClean of Wakefield. "My customer service philosophy has always been the same: the customer is right, and our job is to fix the damage, get the property restored quickly, and help the people behind it get their lives back to normal. That hasn't changed in ten years, and it isn't going to."
As overnight temperatures begin dropping into the 30s across inland Middlesex and Essex County communities, PuroClean of Wakefield is highlighting the property damage risks that peak every year between the first frost and the first hard freeze — a window when many homeowners have not yet winterized exposed plumbing, serviced heating systems, or inspected chimneys and fireplaces ahead of the coldest months.Â
Fall Freeze Prevention Checklist from PuroClean of Wakefield
•   Disconnect and drain outdoor garden hoses, and shut off water to exterior spigots before the first hard freeze to prevent frozen and burst pipes.
•   Insulate exposed pipes in unheated basements, crawl spaces, attics, and garages — a common source of winter water damage claims in the area's older housing stock.
•   Have heating systems, furnaces, and chimneys professionally inspected before regular use begins; a large share of fall and winter house fires are linked to heating equipment and improperly maintained chimneys.
•   Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams later in the season, a leading cause of roof and interior water damage across Massachusetts winters.
•   Know the location of the home's main water shut-off valve — the single fastest way to limit damage in the first minutes of a pipe failure.
•   Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as space heaters and fireplaces come back into use for the season.
These same failure points — frozen and burst pipes, heating-related fires, and ice-dam water intrusion — remain among the leading causes of property damage claims across Massachusetts each winter, and early prevention is consistently less costly and less disruptive than emergency restoration after the fact.
PuroClean of Wakefield's technicians are trained and certified in Water Damage Restoration (WRT) and Applied Structural Drying (ASD), and the company works directly with homeowners' insurance carriers to document damage and guide claims from the first phone call through final reconstruction. The company's full-service restoration offerings include emergency water extraction, structural drying and dehumidification, mold inspection and remediation, fire and smoke damage restoration, sewage cleanup, and reconstruction and rebuild services for residential and commercial properties throughout Middlesex and Essex, Counties.
Over the past decade, Greenwood has also built a reputation for community involvement beyond the job site, including coaching Wakefield Little League baseball and softball, St. Joseph's CYO Basketball, Wakefield Pop Warner football, and youth ice hockey, along with supporting organizations such as Camp Kesem, the Jimmy Fund, Michael J. Fox Foundation and local schools.
"We're not going anywhere — this is our community too," Greenwood added. "As we start our next ten years, our focus is the same as it was on day one: answer the phone when someone needs us, show up fast, and treat every home and business like it matters, because to the family or the business owner standing in front of us, it's everything."
