Dr. Ali Karatay's coffee-painted portrait of Pope Francis highlights art's power to connect cultures and celebrate shared humanity.
WOODLAND, Calif., Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A portrait of Pope Francis created with coffee by artist Dr. Ali Karatay, founder and CEO of Erguvan Art & Academy, was presented to the Pope at the Vatican. Inspired by love, peace, and shared human values, the artwork reflects Karatay's belief in art as a universal language that connects people across cultures and beliefs.
Created with coffee, this artwork shows how art can bring people together and inspire a more peaceful world.
More Than an Artistic Medium: Coffee
For Dr. Karatay, choosing coffee was an essential part of the artwork's message.
Enjoyed in countless ways around the world, coffee celebrates cultural diversity while bringing people together. Beyond its flavors and aromas, it represents conversation, hospitality, friendship, and connection. Across generations and traditions, the simple act of sharing coffee has long offered opportunities for people to meet, exchange stories, and discover common ground.
Through coffee's natural tones, Karatay transforms this familiar experience into a visual expression of unity.
"Art is one of the most powerful languages we share as human beings. A color, a line, a brushstroke, or even a familiar taste or scent can create a meaningful connection between people. I believe art has the power to move beyond what divides us and reveal the humanity we share," says Dr. Karatay.
A Meaningful Response from the Vatican
The portrait was sent to the Vatican in December 2021, accompanied by a personal letter explaining its inspiration. In an official response dated June 20, 2022, the Pope's Private Secretariat confirmed that the artwork had been presented to Pope Francis. The letter also conveyed appreciation for the artistic technique, effort, and meaning behind the portrait.
