Walton Adair Lindley, 78, a long time resident of Wamic, Ore., lost his valiant battle with cancer and passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He was born in Maupin, Ore., to Melvin and Eudith (Minks) Lindley. Walton attended school in The Dalles, Ore., and moved to Martinez Calif., in 1957, graduating from Alhambra Union High School in June 1958. After graduating he entered the Navy in October 1958 and returned to The Dalles in
October 1962, spending a brief time with The Dalles Police Dept. Then he spent the next 30 years
working at the Mt. Fir Lumber Co. in Maupin until it closed in 1992. He went on to another career
after attending the Perry Technical Institute in Yakima, Wash., graduating with a degree in
maintenance mechanics.
He obtained a job with Best Western in The Dalles until he retired in 2000. Walton's accomplishments
through his brief life included being a marksmen while in the Navy. He was a self-defense instructor as well as an EMT and volunteered on the Maupin ambulance.
He held a certificate in advanced tracking. His love of law enforcement included time as a Wasco County deputy sheriff. In his retirement years, he was an accomplished artist and photographer
and he was known for his wood working skills, many of his famous handmade rocking horses can be found through out the northwest.
Walton is survived by his wife Jean Lompa Smith Lindley, a devoted wife of 47 years, and 5fivechildren: Ernie Smith of Happy Valley, Ore., Christina Smith of The Dalles, Ore., Ed Lindley Dundee, Ore.; Annette Householder Corning CA., Kip Lindley (by a previous marriage) of Aloha, Ore., and a slew of
grand kids, great grand kids and many, many friends. He also is survived by a loving brother and sister, Roger J Whitley (Bonne) of Grass Valley, Ore., and Yoanna B Jansse Sawdey (Steve) of
W. Richland, Wash.; and nephews James, Jon and Eric.
Walt was preceded in death by his father and mother. Walton left this world a better place; with his eye on the prize he went home to be with his friend The Lord to spend the rest of the best years to come. A graveside service will be held on Saturday June 17 at 11 a.m. at the Lone Pine cemetery outside the town of Wamic. A luncheon to follow at Barlow Gate Grange #157 in Wamic.
