Velma B. Haskins Felt, known as Granny since a very young age, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018 at the age of 93.
Granny was born in Dillard, Ore., on July 3, 1924, to Velton and Vivian Hedgepeth Haskins. She was raised in Merrill, Ore. She had six siblings, Virginia Moore and her husband Scoot, Lee Haskins and his wife Velda, Delmer Haskins and his wife Peggy, Merle Haskins and his wife Carol, Wes Haskins and his wife Shirley, and Dale Haskins. All preceded her in death but sister-in-laws Peggy and Velda.
She married Axel “Lucky” Felt in Reno, Nev., on Oct. 25, 1943. Lucky passed away on April 21, 1994, in Heppner, Ore. During their 50 years together, they resided in Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Merrill, Redmond, Gresham, Umatilla, Hermiston, and Heppner, all in Oregon, and also Jal, N.M.
Granny worked at Lewis’s Dime Store, The Dairy Store and then wrapped meat at The Merrill Meat Company, all in Merrill. After moving to Madras, she worked at Erickson’s Department Store, while in Hermiston she worked at Burnham’s Department Store and the Button Hole. After moving to Heppner, she worked at The Fabric Store.
She enjoyed making and decorating cakes for all occasions, always from scratch. She was a wonderful cook with family and friends receiving “goodies” regularly.
Her joy all her life was children. From her siblings to grandkids, great-grandkids and many neighborhood children.
Granny is survived by her son, Willard Felt and his wife Susan of The Dalles, Ore., and their children; Todd, Monica and her husband Kendall, Matt and Jake; daughter Donna Osmin and her husband Al of Heppner, Ore., and their children Jess Osmin and his wife Staci, Rick Osmin and his wife Amy; 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Granny spent her last 10 years in Willow Creek Terrace Assisted Living and Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date when the weather is better for traveling.
