Sidney Ward Parman was born Dec. 28, 1936, in The Dalles, Ore., and died the morning of May 11, 2018, at Columbia Basin Care in The Dalles. He was 81 years old.
Sid was born to Giles and Gertha (Philbrick) Parman of Condon, Ore. His childhood was spent in the Condon area and he graduated from Condon High School in 1955. He went on to study at the University of Oregon and Southern Oregon College in Ashland where he met his future wife, Jerri Cagley. They were married in 1958 and moved to Maupin, Ore. There they raised two sons, Stacey and Jeff. Sid worked in the timber industry for most of his career at Cody Logging Company of Tygh Valley as a truck driver and loader operator. He also worked at Dodge Logging Company of Maupin where he worked as a loader operator, foreman and woods boss for 30 more years.
Sid was best known for his incredible mental and physical toughness, exemplary work ethic, honesty and passionate love of his family. He felt a strong civic duty and served his community in many ways: Maupin Volunteer Fire Department, EMT with the South Wasco County Ambulance Service (18 years), Hunter Safety Instructor, Maupin High School Budget Committee, Cub Scout Leader, Town and Country Players, Lone Pine Grange Master, and Little League President. He volunteered his time and energy to help the local farmers (he was raised on a ranch) and any school kids or new workers that needed a mentor.
He was very witty and quick with a joke or limerick.
Sid was an accomplished gunsmith and reloader. He loved hunting, fishing, fly tying, camping, traveling, high school wrestling and hanging out with friends.
His mother, Gertha Boyer, father, Giles Parman, stepmother, Melvia Parman, stepfather, Walt Boyer have passed away.
Sid is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jerri of Maupin; son, Stacey (Shirleen) of Phoenix, Ariz.; son, Jeff (Michelle) of Maupin; sister, Garnett Bettencourt (Frank) of Condon; stepsister, Sharon Kumm of The Dalles; sister-in-law, Pat Putman of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; six grandchildren (Crystal, Zack, Ryan, Jesse, J. Lee, Jeremy); six great-grandchildren; six nephews and several cousins.
A graveside service at Kelly Cemetery on Juniper Flat will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2018. A celebration of life will be held at Maupin Legion Hall, 1 p.m., with a potluck dessert. Everyone is cordially invited to attend both services.
