With her husband of 54 years at her side, Sharon (“Shon”) Editha McCulloch (Prettyman) peacefully surrendered to a battle against heart disease on May 9, 2015. Born in Ashland, Ore., on May 4, 1943, she had just turned 72.
Shon was a very unique, and creative individual, with many passions. Early on she discovered a love for reading, with books opening up amazing worlds and ideas. She also had a love and talent for music, playing wind instruments and many others.
With a strong belief that “if you can read about it, you can figure out how to do it”, Shon tackled multitudes of creative projects; everything from restoring cars, to making beautiful hand-made musical instruments. Many babies enjoyed her quilts, and her polymer clay creations were gifts to many.
Her love for people touched the most lives. She was a true “people’s person” and especially had a heart for survivors of neglect and abuse. She volunteered at shelters for abused women, and worked with at-risk kids. Every day, she gave her time and affection to many different people, sharing encouraging words when possible. The message that she wanted everyone to be left with is to “Be Kind”; treat those around you and yourself with kindness.
High school sweethearts, she and her husband married right after graduation. They moved from Ashland to the Portland area in 1974, then moved their children to “the country” in Yamhill, Ore. After retirement, they relocated to The Dalles, Ore., where they raised their eldest granddaughter, Hadley. Two years ago, they moved to Richland, Wash.
They shared a love of bowling and softball, both playing and coaching. Everywhere they lived, she participated in one or more bowling leagues. Most recently, they were on a team together in Richland. When she couldn’t bowl, she watched and cheered their team on.
Shon is survived by her husband, Darrell; their daughter Bentley and son-in-law Chris (Barbour); son Derek and girlfriend Cynthia; and son Dustin; ten grandchildren; one great-grandson, and numerous “adopted” children and adults who called her “mom” and “grandma”.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 16th, 1:00 – 3:00, 250 Skyline Drive, Richland, Washington. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Shriners or Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
