Richard Cecil Hire was born in Condon, Oregon, to parents Cecil and Ruth ( Buckingham) Hire on February 24th, 1928. Richard grew up in The Dalles, Oregon with his sisters Helen, Jean, Linda, and Myrna.
After high school, Dick attended Clark Community College for one year. He met Marilyn Disney and they were married in June of 1949. Their first son, John Richard, was born in 1950. Dick was awarded a basketball scholarship with Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington. Dick graduated in 1951 and was hired on with Price Waterhouse as an accountant in 1951. In 1952, their second son James Ronald Hire, was born. The family moved to New Jersey for two years and their third child, JoAnne Rickelle was born in New Jersey in 1961. Following JoAnne’s birth, the family wanted to return home to the Pacific Northwest and Dick found a new position with Cascade Corporation. Dick worked with Cascade for many years working his way up to CFO, Treasurer of the Board of Directors, and later, Vice President for Cascade Corporation.
Dick retired in the mid-1980s and spent time with his wife of many years doing some traveling and enjoying what life has to offer.
Dick and Marilyn had enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, Matt, Sean and Ryan Hire (sons of John and Lana Hire); and Chandler Hire, son of James and Linda Hire.
Marilyn was taken ill in the summer of 2000 and sadly passed away in September of 2000 leaving Dick quite alone and missing his wife of many years.
Another tragedy the Hire family leaving Dick quite devastated when his first born John passed away suddenly of a heart attack in 2006.
Dick loved his wife and family and enjoyed golf and all sports. - To our The Dalles area readers, Dick is in fact the son of the founders of the Hire Electric Co. family.
Dick will be greatly missed and is loved by so many.
Dick is preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilyn; parents, Cecil and Ruth Hire; sisters, Helen Flitcraft, Jean Hire, Linda Hire Hanes, and Myrna Mead; and son, John Hire.
Survivors include his son, James R. Hire (Linda); daughter, JoAnne “Joni” Hire (Harley); four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Public visitation will take place in Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, November 21st, 2013 from Noon to 6pm. A Rosary will take place at 6p in Skyline Funeral Home Chapel following the visitation. A funeral mass will be held in St. Pius X church on Friday, November 22nd, 2013, at 11am. Remembrances in lieu of flowers may be made to Gonzaga University.
