Nola Annetta Wharton, 98, a longtime resident of The Dalles, Oregon died Saturday, February 15, 2014 in Kennewick, Washington.
Nola was born October 16, 1915 in Prairie Hill, Missouri to Luther and Annie Wilson. She was raised and educated in Missouri, graduating from Prairie Hill High School in 1933. After graduation Nola worked as a nanny in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1937, she and Guy Nathan Wharton were married.
They lived on the family ranch near Ashwood, Oregon for seven years. She and Guy moved to The Dalles, Oregon in 1944 where they resided for fifty-nine years. Nola worked for Safeway and as a Quality Control Manager for The Dalles Cherry Growers for twenty-three years. She played on the city volleyball and bowling teams. Nola and her husband were members of the Eagles and Elks lodge. With her husband she enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, travel and spending time at the Oregon coast.
Nola was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Annie Wilson; husband Guy Wharton and son Gary Wharton and siblings Ineze Shaver, Ramsey Wilson and Eva Cook.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Wharton Pennala of Kennewick, sister Nita Brannis, grandchildren Eric Pennala, Laurie Cowgill and Kimberly Pennala Burks and great grandchildren Emma, Chloe, Ava, Erica and Ireland all of Kennewick.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at the IOOF 18th Street Cemetery in The Dalles, Oregon. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
