Merle Marshall, 91, a resident of Dufur, OR, died of cancer at home, Friday, May 9, 2014.
He was born in Estacada, OR, the younger son of Frank and Carrie (Davis) Marshall. He grew up in the hills above Estacada and graduated from Estacada High in 1940.
Merle served in the 801st Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He served in the Azores and on Okinawa. After the war, he was working as a carpenter on the Grand Coulee Dam and during that time, met the love of his life. He married Dorothy Jess on Oct. 10, 1947. They built a home in Estacada, OR.
He worked a variety of jobs before he started working for the U.S. Forest Service. He was transferred to Dufur, OR, in 1956 and worked as a Fire Control Officer until he retired in 1978.
He was a past commander of the American Legion, a past master of the Masonic Lodge, past patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Al Kader Shriners.
Merle and Dorothy enjoyed family, travel and meeting with long time friends.
Dorothy passed away in Sept. 10, 2013. They were only a month short of 66 years of marriage. He is survived by daughter Judy Marshall; son Jerry and his wife Beverly; granddaughter Amy Cantrell and husband Schown, great grandchildren Kaleb and London; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Friday, May 30, at 11 A.M. at Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Order of Eastern Star Cancer Research, Shriner
Hospitals, Dufur Ambulance, or Heart of Hospice Foundation.
