Marge Brogan died on Thursday, November 14, 2013, one month shy of her 91st birthday, at Cascade Senior Care, after a year of declining health. She was born Marjorie Geraldine Magann on December 14, 1922, the second child of Ernest and Sadie (Dale) Magann. Born on her mother’s 21st birthday, it was often remarked that Marge was her mother’s best birthday present ever.
After business college, Marge returned to Buena Vista to work. In early 1945, while attending an Army USO dance on the nearby campus of Washington & Lee University, she met a 2nd Lieutenant by the name of Robert (Bob) Brogan. An Oregon native, Bob was attending Washington & Lee, enrolled in Army Special Services classes. They fell in love and married in Tyler, Texas on Sept. 1, 1945, and enjoyed 61 very happy years together, until Bob’s death in 2007.
Marge and Bob moved back to Oregon in 1947, when Bob was accepted into the University of Oregon Dental School. Upon Bob’s graduation in 1951, they moved to The Dalles. Bob started his dental practice, while Marge stayed home to raise their three sons. After they were grown, she worked as Bob’s dental assistant until his retirement in 1995. Marge and Bob were founding members of Gateway Presbyterian Church in The Dalles in 1956, where she remained active for over 55 years.
Marge enjoyed traveling, gardening and oil painting; additionally, she held special talents in regards to cooking and baking. She and Bob took many long road trips across the US and Canada— where she would always pick up a rock or two from her travels. But most of all, she will be remembered as a loving mother and great friend to those who knew her.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mack. She is survived by her sons Brian, Bruce and Dan, and their wives; grandchildren Andy, Ryan, Rob, and Sam and Finley; great-granddaughters Jocelyn and Louisa; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
It was Marge’s wish that no service be held. She felt friends might want to contribute to the charity of their choice, or to her favorites: Meals on Wheels and Hospice of the Gorge.
The family extends our heartfelt thanks to Marge’s various caregivers at Cherry Heights, Cascade Senior Care and Providence, Hospice of the Gorge, who helped to make her final weeks as comfortable as possible.
