Lyla Marie Major, age 89, died on Dec. 7th 2015 in The Dalles, OR at MCMC surrounded by her family. She passed away peacefully following a heart attack.
Lyla was born in Strongfield, Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to Wisconsin at the age of 11. She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in Lacrosse, WI.
She married Virgil H Major in 1948 in a double wedding with her twin sister. They had two children, Michael and Susan. She worked in private duty nursing to help put Virgil through pharmacy school. They opened Major Drug Store in Nekoosa WI and operated it for 20 years. After retiring in 1992 they moved to The Dalles to be close to family.
Lyla was a member of Gateway Church and loved her weekly Wednesday Bible Study. She enjoyed bridge, bowling, curling, and her passion was golf. She was a fifty plus year member of PEO. Lyla was known by her friendly smile and kindness to all she knew.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Virgil Major and her sister Lillian of Viroqua, WI, her son Michael Major (Kay) of Evart, MI, and her daughter Susan Murat (Michael ) of The Dalles. Six grandsons, Benjamin, Timothy, and Seth Major, Joshua, Jeffrey, and Marc Murat, and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Florence Benrud and brother Lloyd.
The family thanks all who helped her in so many ways, including all the nurses and Dr’s and supporting staff of MCMC who gave her such wonderful care.
