Lela May Smith was born July 22, 1933 to Roy Lee Weaver and Alice Shelton Weaver Talmage in Winona, Mo. She was the second of 4 children and grew up in Winona until 1945 when the family moved to Lynden, Wash. and then on to settle in The Dalles, Ore., in 1953.
Lela met Raymond Alfred Smith in The Dalles, Ore. where the couple married on January 5, 1962. They raised 3 children, Dawn, Terry and Carmen together while traveling to many different locations around the country with Raymond working for the railroad and Lela working as a telephone operator supervisor, and eventually settled back in The Dalles. ”Bid” and “Stubby”, as Lela and Raymond were affectionately known, enjoyed many activities together. Some of Lela’s favorites were bowling, crocheting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Lela is survived by her children and their spouses, Dawn Johnson, Terry and Mary Smith, Carmen and Carl Cagle. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and their spouses, Trish Smith, Danny Sullivan, Mackenzie, Scott, Gage, Jessica, Tabitha and Jake Squier, Bentley, Isabella, Cortney and Tiffny Smith, James and Celisse Cagle, Charlie, Elin, Erin, Kavi, Zeek, and Miri, Colby and Amanda Archer and Kadence. Siblings Evelyn Williams, Don and Diane Weaver and Ann and Don Hubbard. Also numerous nieces, nephews and friends that became family. Lela knew no strangers and loved all. She leaves a legacy of an amazing woman who was always there with open arms and an open heart. She will forever be missed by any who had the privilege of being in her life.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband and parents who were surely waiting to greet her at Heaven’s door.
A viewing will be held Sunday August 28, 2016 from 2-5 p.m. and Monday 9-10 a.m. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Monday August 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. with graveside to follow at IOOF on Three Mile Rd. A gathering will be held afterwards at the The Dalles Eagles Club. Stan Lee will be the officiant. Casket bearers will be Danny Sullivan, Gage Sullivan, Colby Archer, Jake Squier, Carl Cagle, and Paul Shelquist.
