John Shipley

John Shipley passed away peacefully at his home on April 9, 2014 after a long illness. John was born March 31, 1924 to Adelia and Lester Earl Shipley in Sylvan, Oregon. He joined two older brothers, Vernon and Earle on the family ranch outside of Grass Valley, Oregon. His father died of tuberculosis in 1927. His mother married Tom Douma in 1932 and he was the father John knew. The family moved to a ranch east of Moro where John grew up and later farmed. John attended school briefly in Grass Valley then attended the rest of grade school and high school at the Moro Grade School where he graduated in 1942.

John attended Eastern Oregon College for a short time before entering the United States Navy where he served from 1943 to 1945. He returned to Sherman County where he worked for the Moro Grain Growers. He met his wife, Doris, in Moro where she was working at the Moro Café and were married in 1948. They moved to the family ranch near Moro, in 1949 to farm and raise a family. John raised wheat and cattle until his retirement in 1988.
