Homer Curtis Baker passed away peacefully on October 13, 2015. He was born on November 11, 1922 in Madras, Ore., and raised in Mosier and The Dalles, Ore. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1942. He was on the State Championship football team in 1941.
He married Phyllis Marjorie Wilson in 1942, and they raised two children in The Dalles: Barbara and Curtis Baker. Homer owned and operated Homer’s Market, a local grocery, hunting and fishing store until 1990. Homer was a much beloved fishing guide, and was one of the first people to design and run a power boat up the lower Deschutes River. He was recently proclaimed as a “Legend of the River” by the Northwest Fishing Guide Association.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis, children Barbara and Curtis, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Homer lived his life around the seasons. He loved all hunting and fishing sports and lived to out-fish his friends. Homer had friends and admirers of all ages and will be missed by all.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of Homer’s life at Casa El Mirador in The Dalles. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Homer’s name to The Deschutes River Conservancy, PO Box 1560, Bend, OR 97709.
