Guy Thomas “Spud” Simer, 27, was taken from us July 30, 2016 in a harvesting accident outside of Pendleton. Spud was born in Madras, Ore., October 24, 1988, and was generally considered the ugliest baby anyone had ever seen. He resembled a potato, hence the nickname “Spud.”
Spud was raised on the family farm in Tygh Valley, working from a young age in the fields changing irrigation and helping his family with the day to day farm activities. He was active in 4-H, and loved hunting, dogs, and sports from day one. Spud attended and graduated from Dufur High School in 2007. He was a standout on the 2006 Dufur state championship football team and was a star wrestler for The Dalles High School. He received a degree in Animal Science from Oregon State University in 2012, and he earned a degree for diesel mechanics from Blue Mountain Community College in 2014.
Spud was not only an outstanding athlete, but also the best friend to many. He was one of the good ones, and everyone was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. He was a good boy, and a great young man. The last few days have been filled with an amazing amount of sentiment and feelings for Spud. Friend, loved one, fun loving, adventurous, hard working, smart, spiffy dancer, hunter and trapper, but the most expressed word has been family. Spud was family. Spud not only touched so many people’s lives, he became part of their family. He wasn’t just your friend, he was your brother, someone who you could call on and rely on. So very many families other than his own will suffer from this loss. Everyone who knew Spud, loved him, and they too have lost a member of their family.
Spud is survived by his mother and father Brian and Molly Simer of Tygh Valley, and brother Quinn Simer of Tygh Valley, his grandparents, Paul and Jan Simer of The Dalles, and Rick and Jo Harvey of Tygh Valley, his girlfriend Emily Wagner of Pendleton, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that were honored to know and love Spud.
There will be a graveside service Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Webb family cemetery 3 miles south of Dufur on Hwy 197 beginning at 4 p.m. with a gathering to follow at White River Outfitters on Conroy Rd. in Tygh Valley.
