Frederick LaGrande Hill died May 13, 2017, at the age of 96. Mr. Hill was born January 24, 1921, in Grass Valley, Ore., to Walter E. and Margaret (Brogan) Hill.
Fred grew up on the family ranch west of Antelope, Ore., and attended local schools. During World War II he served as a corporal with the 263rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Engineer Special (Amphibious) Brigade in New Guinea, Philippine and Japan Theaters and received his discharge December 24, 1945.
He married Elisabeth (Beth) Rooper on June 23, 1956, in The Dalles, and they resided in Wasco, until moving to Culver, in 1997.
Fred held a variety of jobs from 1946 to 1954 (primarily ranching) then became employed at Sherman County Farm Chemicals, serving as manager until becoming a partner in the business in 1979. After retirement in 1987, he and Beth spent the winter months in Winterhaven, Calif.
Fred was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madras, Ore., Knights of Columbus, American Legion (at Wasco) and Elks Lodge 303 The Dalles.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and agriculture in general.
Services will be held on Friday May 26, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church 1222 W. 10th, The Dalles, Ore. Rosary 10:30 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m. and burial to follow.
