Eldon Metteer, a resident of The Dalles for nearly 50 years beginning in the 1920’s, died Nov. 1 at Parker, Colo. He was 99 years old.
Mr. Metteer was born May 20, 1917, to Elmer and Olive (Cushing) Metteer in Antelope. The family moved to a homestead outside of The Dalles, and he was educated at St. Mary's Academy and The Dalles High School. He then attended the University of Portland and majored in English. He returned to The Dalles, where he met his wife, Virginia, who was visiting from Los Angeles. They were married on Aug. 22, 1941, at St.
Peter's Catholic Church. They had three children: Stephen, of Denver; John, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Christopher, of Parker, Colo. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Wilfred, Robert and Dale) and two sisters (Marie and Doris).
Mr. Metteer worked for the Union Pacific Railroad beginning in 1941, and he was a brakeman on a road run from The Dalles to Hinkle for most of his career. He was transferred to Portland and continued on the road run to Hinkle until his retirement in the mid-1970s. He and Virginia were active in church activities at St.. Peter's, and at East Hill Church and Mountain view Christian Church in Gresham. They
moved to Colorado in 2007 to be close to family.
A memorial service was held Nov. 15 at Crown Crest of Parker, where Mr. Metteer spent the final few months of his life. Family members were present from North Carolina, Texas, Washington, and Colorado. Eulogies were given by his son Christopher and a grandson, Brian Metteer, of Dallas, Texas.
