E. David Bishop, 89, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Oregon Veteran’s Home.
David was born on January 17, 1925 in Addy, Washington to John Bishop and Ora (Skeels) Bishop. He spent his childhood and youth on the family farm in Marble Valley Washington enjoying the many hunting and fishing opportunities to be had there. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947 and then moved to Portland, Oregon where he worked for Brayley and Graham. In 1951 he enlisted in the Air Force, serving in the Korean War until September 1952. During this time at a dance in Portland he met the love of his life, Ritamae Jane Stream. They were married on August 16, 1952 and soon built a home in southwest Portland where they raised their two children, Vineta and Gary. After David’s retirement from the Post Office in 1983 they moved to Wamic, Oregon and spent their Winter’s in Yuma, Arizona with family and friends. In 2007 they moved to The Dalles, Oregon.
From his youth, David enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent many an hour by a rushing river or out in his dory at Pacific City or in the forests and fields of Central Oregon. He also enjoyed traveling, square dancing, playing cards, bowling and watching sports.
After a long illness David went home to his heavenly Father on August 12, 2014 at the age of 89.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Ritamae Bishop and his three siblings, Hezekiah, Ezra and Lester. He is survived by his daughter Vineta Means and son Gary Bishop, son-in-law Karl Means, grandson Alexander Means, sisters-in-law Janet Stream and Lavelle Bishop, brother-in-law Jesse Shafer and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 1 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church. 6835 SW 46th Avenue Portland, Oregon.
Interment with military honors will be Monday, August 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the fine staff at the VA home in The Dalles who took care of David in the last two years of his life. Any memorial donations may be directed to the VA home.
