Daniel died suddenly of smoking related health problems on July 21, 2018. Dan lived in The Dalles, Ore., his entire life. Dan's parents were Marie Thomas Smith and Leo Smith.
He attended The Dalles schools, graduating in 1968. He enlisted in the US Navy after graduating, serving for four years in Hawaii on the USS Carpenter.
He was a skilled mechanic and he loved his dune buggy and race car. He highly valued his wide circle of friends and family with whom he went fishing, gave gardening advice, and shared his cooking expertise.
Dan is survived by most of his many friends and family, including spouse Jean Palmateer of Salem, Ore.; son Leo Smith of The Dalles; daughter Julia Heilman, her husband Brad; grandkids, Madison and Alex of Salem; sister Sharon Mountain of Willamina, Ore.; brother Chuck Smith of Hermiston, Ore.; also many cousins too many to name.
Dan will be interred by his family in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore., on October 5, 2018. October 6, 2018, 1 to 3 p.m. Dan's family and friends are invited to a remembrance picnic at the Sorosis Park shelter. Bring memories and Dan's favorite food.
