The Hood River Valley High Eagles dropped their last two Northwest Oregon Conference Class 5A girls soccer games by lopsided margins.
The Eagles (1-3 NWOC, 2-6-2 overall) lost 8-0 to the No. 4-ranked La Salle Prep High Falcons (3-1-1 NWOC, 7-3-2 overall) on Oct. 4 at La Salle High School. Coach Leonor Lopez Agiurre’s team also lost 7-0 to the No. 1 ranked and defending league champion Wilsonville High Wildcats (5-0 NWOC, 9-2 overall) in an Oct. 11 contest.
The Eagles had a much better performance in a 1-1 tie in a non-league contest versus the Pendleton High Buckaroos (4-6-1) on Oct. 9 in Pendleton. Eagle sophomore Magnolia Clermont scored a goal to give HRV a 1-0 halftime advantage. Pendleton tied the game midway through the second half.
“It felt good to score a goal against Pendleton to help give our team the lead and it really provided us with a confidence boost,” Clermont said, an Eagle team captain who leads HRV in scoring with five goals.
“I think the way we played in the second half kind of represents how well we can really play.”
“Our goalkeeper Valeria Miramontes [13 saves] showed an immense amount of discipline, and she never gave up and she went for every single ball that she could get her hands on.
“The players are starting to realize what their expectations are as part of being on the varsity team. They know how much dedication and motivation and discipline it actually takes to be able to play at a high level ... As long as the girls maintain the mentality of fighting all the way through in every match and practicing like they play, then I think we’re going to reshape our program into what we visualize as a successful team."
