THE GORGE — Trout Lake’s girls basketball team needed a win in its Feb. 4 showdown against South Wasco County in Maupin to clinch the 2024-25 regular-season title, but the host Redsides had other ideas.
South Wasco built an early lead, suffered a mid-game lull, but finished strong to hold off the Mustangs, 45-35, and create a first-place tie in the loss column of the Big Sky Conference — and West Division — standings.
Trout Lake still holds the tiebreaker advantage over South Wasco, based on Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) power rankings. That is how the league’s West Division playoff seeding will be determined, should the teams remain tied at the end of this week (which marks the end of the regular season).
Dufur is the No. 3 seeded team from the Big Sky West, but the Rangers still have a say in who finishes 1-2. Dufur was scheduled to host Trout Lake on Feb. 11 and plays at South Wasco on Feb. 14.
There is a lot yet to be decided in the Big Sky, as none of the playoff match ups have been determined. Trout Lake, South Wasco and Dufur (in some order) will match up against the top three teams from the East Division — currently Ione/Arlington, Sherman County, and Wheeler County (in some order). The Big Sky girls playoff format calls for the No. 3-seeded teams from each division playing at the No. 2 seeds on Feb. 18. Winners advance to play at the No. 1 seeds on Feb. 20. The Feb. 18 winners also qualify — along with the No. 1 seeds — for the four-team district tourney Feb. 22 at The Dalles High School. The Big Sky has three automatic berths into the 1A state playoffs.
