THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks’ 16-member boys/girls swim team competed in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 1, 13-team championship meet Feb. 14-15 at the Madras Aquatic Center.
The Riverhawks were led by junior Everest Lenardson and sophomore Kaiya Doty, who won individual events to qualify for the state meet Feb. 21-22 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton. It’s the first time Lenardson and Doty have qualified for state.
“Out of the 32 individual and eight relays, we only had four events where the kids did not swim a personal best time. This is a great group of kids that represented their school and our community very well at Madras,” Coach Pat Shortt said.
Lenardson swam a personal-best time of 52.90 seconds to win the boys 100 freestyle. Doty, who also competes in ski racing, lowered her best time by five seconds as she swam 1:15.06 to win the girls 100 breaststroke.
“Kaiya jumped off the blocks strong while taking the lead immediately and she never looked back while finishing in first place. We had a lot of great swims, including an outstanding performance by freshman Adele Black, who dropped 39 seconds off her personal best time in the girls 200 free,” Shortt said.
The Dalles sophomore Rhett Loughmiller cut two seconds off his previous best time and took second in the boys 100 backstroke at 1:04.20. Loughmiller’s time put him into contention to possibly qualify for state with a wild card spot. The Riverhawks boys team took third place in the team scoring.
