Hood River Valley’s boys cross country team finished fifth and the girls were ninth at the Nov. 4 OSAA Class 5A state meet at Lane Community College.
The Eagle boys scored 177 team points, just two behind South Albany, which won the fourth-place trophy. Crater, Summit and Corvallis finished 1-2-3.
Hood River had a strong second half of the 5,000-meter 5A race, moving from as far back as 12th. Two miles in, HRV had climbed back to seventh and the Eagle runners continued to pick off opposing runners.
Hood River had qualified for the state meet by winning the NWOC district championship Oct. 25 at Champoeg State Park. Coach Brandon Bertram has said this year’s young boys team (there were no seniors on the state meet roster) was one of the most diligent he’s had in his 10 years as head coach. That paid off at the state meet, under less-than-ideal conditions, as the top five scoring runners for the Eagles improved their position over the final third of the race.
HRV was led by juniors Logan King and Kai Wagner. King finished in 21st place in 16 minutes, 39 seconds, with Wagner crossing the line in 29th in 17:01. King was 40th in the 2022 championship race and Wagner was 46th.
HRV also received a 34th-place finish from sophomore Sam Knoll (17:10). Sophomore Victor Coffman and junior David Kerr were 52nd and 53rd in 17:55 and 17:57, respectively.
The live scoring at the meet led to some anxious moments after the race, as the final scores were tabulated. Hood River Valley held the fourth spot via the live scoring until South Albany’s fifth runner showed in the system. When that happened, the Eagles dropped out of the trophy/podium finish and into fifth.
The Hood River Valley girls team finished ninth in the 5A meet with 247 points. The Eagles were led by sophomore Syl Perrin, who was 15th overall in 19:25.
HRV’s second through fifth runners were led by sophomore Charlotte Fuller, who was 51st (22:02); sophomore Sadie Baumann (65th, 22:51), junior Katie Godkin (67th, 22:57), and junior Olivia Millikin-Spray (71st, 23:05) completed the Eagle team score.
The Hood River girls had secured a state meet berth through the state’s wild-card system after finishing third at the NWOC championships. The third-place finish by the HRV girls snapped the school’s district championship streak at seven. But the program’s sixth-longest Oregon active streak of consecutive years of qualifying for the state meet — 12 successive seasons — remains intact.
